Pagdiriwang: Celebrating the Philippine Island Life
This hands-on exhibit for children includes several pieces that will impress
adults, like the peinetas- -hair accessories made of wood, silver or gold
filigree. Did you know the moon buggy was a product of Filipino
ingenuity? The new, permanent Philippine exhibit features another
ingenious invention, the "jeepney," a 1943 Wily's jeep converted
into a passenger minibus and cultural icon. |

Mexico
Drive a jeep to our Mexican village of Oaxaca (Wa-ha-ca) where every day is a fiesta! Climb the slippery pole, palo encebado, or grind corn to make tortillas. Shop in a "miscelanea" store or in the open-air market. Learn some Mexican crafts, such as embroidery and weaving, or just enjoy dressing up in costume and dancing to mariachi music. |

Port St.
Louis:
This exhibit will introduce visitors to international commerce, particularly the exporting of products from St. Louis. Children will have the opportunity to actually load simulated cargoes onto a scaled-down version of a barge. They can then pilot the tow boat and barge by computer simulation down the Mississippi River to New Orleans, where they may off-load their cargo by computer to different freighters bound for ports around the world. Hands-on components provide experiences in decoding nautical flags, tying nautical knots, and more. |
